TUCSON - UA used a couple of big innings to take control of the game en route to a 13-1 victory over Virginia in a five-inning game during second-day action at UA's Worth Wildcat Invitational softball tournament Saturday.
Shortstop Heather Field hit a one-out solo home run to left field to give Virginia a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
UA answered quickly with some aggressive base running and hitting to take
a lead. Mackenzie Vandergeest walked with one out in the top of the fourth
and was doubled home by Jackie Coburn to tie the game. Shelly Shultz
singled to left and UA coach Mike Candrea sent Coburn home, sliding under
the tag for the go-ahead run.
Schultz moved to third on a single by Lisha Ribellia, then scored on another close play at the plate when Allison Von Liechenstein bounced one to the pitcher for a fielder's choice. Autumn Champion walked and Ribellia scored on a third close play at the plate off a sacrifice fly by Courtney Fossatti, giving UA a 4-1 lead.
In the fifth, the Cats had back-to-back doubles by Lovie Jung and Vandergeest for one run, a walk by Coburn and a a double by Schultz to set up a two-run single by Lisha Ribellia, and a hit by Von Liechtenstein to set up a run-scoring single by Champion. Jung walked to load the bases with two outs and Vandergeest drove in two more with a sinking liner to right for a second double. Coburn knocked in two more with a single for the final scoring.
In all, Arizona had nine runs on eight hits in the inning. Hollowell gave up only two hits, and gave way to Leslie Wolfe in the bottom of the fifth. Wolfe struck out the side.
