TUCSON, Ariz. ?- For the first time this season, The University of Arizona men’s tennis team (4-6) has been able to string together a series of victories after dealing Memphis (3-6) a 6-1 loss Thursday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Complex. For the second consecutive match a revamped doubles roster paid dividends for the Wildcats, as they headed into singles play with the one point doubles advantage.

“Sometimes doubles teams can get stale. We’ve found some new combinations of guys that compliment each other better, and it’s worked out well for us so far. Sometime change is good,” said assistant coach Tom Lloyd.

In singles, the Wildcats were dominant, winning five of the six matches. Freshman Ravid Hezi continued his strong play at the No. 3 spot with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jimmy Khougassian. Hezi has won five of his last six matches. Sophomore Peter Zimmer continued his own streak with a straight set victory at No. 4 over Memphis’ Charlie Ramsay, Zimmer’s fourth in a row. At the No. 5 and 6 spots, brothers Jason and Alex Labrosse both picked up wins. In the final match of the day, junior Bruno Alcala pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Memphis sophomore Benedikt Fischer. Alcala arrived later than expected to the match after one of his mid-terms was delayed.

“The guys have been working real hard all week, both on the court and in the classroom,” added Lloyd. “They’ve given us an amazing effort all year, and have managed to get excellent grades as well. We (the coaches) have a lot of respect for them.”

The Wildcats will hope to continue their three-match home winning streak Saturday at 10 a.m. as they take on No. 43 Denver. Tomorrow, Denver challenges Memphis at noon. All matches will be played at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Complex.
