Arizona Head Coach Lute Olson Quotes:

“I think it’s pretty obvious why (Washington State) is a tough team to play. We got a lead that looked like we were in good shape, and then they scored on several possessions where I thought we were defending well, but they got their penetrations and kick outs.”

“WSU is very hard to play and you can see why they have been as competitive (this season) as they have. They had great wins over Washington, both times, and did well against Cal and Stanford.”

“I thought from our standpoint that our star of the game was Mustafa (Shakur). He did a great job of running his team and it looks like he’s getting more comfortable in that position. He had seven assists and was playing much more within himself and playing well defensively.”

“(WSU) does such a good job when they penetrate because they fan people out and find the open guys. What we had to do was take away the baseline drive and have the post ?'flatten’ the driver out. There are a lot of intricacies of having to defend that type of penetration.”

Marcus Williams stepped up big for us in the end. We had a hard time playing Kirk Walters for a long time because they were penetrating on him and we can’t play zone against them because they would just hold the ball for 30 seconds and we’ll play right into their hands.”

“Bret Brierlmaier came in and gave us good minutes. Hassan (Adams), thank goodness we have a new x-ray machine in the training facilities so we could take him in at halftime for an x-ray. Everything showed up fine on the x-ray, his shoulder is strained but at least he’ll be ok for Saturday.”

“I’m sure (Adams) is very excited (for Saturday) just like everyone will be; fans and players on both teams alike. The game (against Washington) will be a fun game to play in, to watch and to coach. Brandon Roy has had an unbelievable year and there is no question in my mind that he will be the Pac-10 Player of the Year when you look at everything he’s done for his them.”

“Right now, if I take us out of the equation, I think they (Washington) are playing the best basketball in the conference. They are very quick defensively and doing a great job of on-the-ball pressure. They rotate and penetrate well and they play a match-up type two-three zone just as well as a man-to man zone. They  also have strong outside shooting. (Washington) basically has the entire package and it’s going to take a great effort form our team and the crowd.”

“Saturday will be our first annual red-out for senior day. I don’t know if we can keep people out of here that don’t have red on, but I’m hoping that everyone takes the challenge and greets the Huskies with a sea of red.”

Junior F Ivan Radenovic

“They are definitely a tough team to play. We tried to put a lot of pressure on them to try to get them away from their game. We did a pretty good job of that in the first half.”

On Washington State’s adjustments for the second half:

“They played a lot better in the second half. They ran a lot of pick and rolls that were tough to defend. They hit some big shots.”

“They did a good job of playing hard and getting back into the game, but at the same time we didn’t play as hard as we should have at times.”

On Saturday’s game against Washington:

”They are playing the best basketball of anyone [in the conference] besides us. The key against them is to stop their running game. They like to play fast and we have to play aggressive with them”

Junior G Mustafa Shakur

“We came out right away and put a lot of pressure on them. We played great defense and made it tough on them.”

“I came out and tired to play with a lot of intensity and to play focused.”

“We tried to push the tempo as much as we could. We wanted to play the game the way we wanted it to be played. We probably played a little bit faster than we normally do.”

“In the second half, they started dribble penetrating more and kicking it out. They hit some big shots, but we needed to play tighter defense.”

Junior C Kirk Walters

“[When I picked up my second foul] it was frustrating.  I have to play smarter than that.  It seems like I’ve been picking up those silly fouls lately.”

“We know that we have to win, and we just try to take it one game at a time.  It’s been like that for quite a while for us, and the last few games will be no different.  It’s the same thing on Saturday, when Washington comes here.  Their team and [Brandon] Roy are playing great basketball right now.  We’ll have to be ready.”

Freshman F Marcus Williams

“Our team came together tonight.  We’re maturing out there.  We had some young players in there down the stretch, who haven’t played a lot of towards the end of games.  We just have to keep maturing.”

“[Washington State] exposed us with their pick and roll, so Coach [Lute Olson] had to go with a four guard lineup to handle the pick and roll.”

“When we left the locker room we were done celebrating, and getting ready for the Washington game.  Tomorrow we’ll come in and have a good practice, and then we have to go take care of business on Saturday.”

“With [Washington’s Brandon] Roy and [Hassan] Adams out there it will be an epic battle.  They’re both up for Pac-10 Player of the Year, and Washington is like our rival.  I know Arizona State is the rival, but it’s always like a rivalry against UW.”
