Stanford Captures South Central Regional Title

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 4 Stanford University women’s gymnastics team captured the South Central Regional gymnastics championships on Saturday evening inside McKale Center before a crowd of 1,390. The region’s No. 2 seed, Oregon State, narrowly held off host Arizona in the final rotation, to claim the second NCAA Championships qualifying spot out of the region.

The Cardinal staked an early lead over the rest of the field, and did not look back. Stanford posted team scores of 48.975 on bars, 49.250 on beam, 49.275 on floor and 49.100 on vault to record a team score of 196.600. Oregon State (196.075), Arizona (196.025), Illinois (194.625) and Illinois-Chicago (190.925) rounded out the rest of the field.

Tabitha Yim won the all-around title with a score tally of 39.475, edging out UA’s Karin Wurm, who matched a career high with a total of 39.425. Yim’s 9.900 on bars was also good enough to edge out Wurm, who recorded a 9.875. Liz Tricase of Stanford also won an individual title, as she notched a 9.900 on bars.

Perhaps the two most exciting individual title performances came during the last rotation, which featured an intense battle between Oregon State and Arizona for second place.

In the fourth lineup spot for the Wildcats, Jamie Holton set a new career high with a meet-best beam score of 9.925. The score was one of four 9.900s or better for UA in the final event, and helped UA post a 49.425, the second high mark ever in school history on the event, to challenge the Beavers for the second qualifying spot.

The Beavers would not turn over the lead however, as Tasha Smith capped the OSU floor rotation with a fabulous floor performance, which received a meet-high 9.925 from the judges. The score pushed OSU’s floor score 49.275, which put it 0.050 points ahead of the Wildcats for the meet’s final tally.

Qualifying individually for the NCAA Championships were three Arizona gymnasts. Wurm, who placed second in the all-around, and teammate Brittney Morgan who totaled a 39.275, claimed the top two all-around spots for individuals not on a qualifying team. Additionally, Holton’s beam title earned her a berth in the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA Championships will be held on April 26-28 in Salt Lake City.
