TUCSON--Reigning USA Softball national co-player of the week Taryne Mowatt had less than her best stuff but turned in another winning pitching performance and No. 4 Arizona made the most of six hits to beat No. 12 Stanford, 4-1, Friday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The victory kept Arizona in first place in the Pac-10 race at 5-1 and added to its April resurgence at 29-8 overall. Stanford dropped to 27-10 and 3-4.
Mowatt (22-7) scattered five hits, but gave up a solo home run to Rosey Neill in the top of the fifth to snap a scoreless innings-pitched streak at 21. She later pitched through a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, and had the bases full again in the seventh after a hit batter, Alissa Haber's seventh-inning double and a walk. She finished with 11 strikeouts and four walks.
UA catcher Callista Balko knocked her eighth homer of the season with a runner aboard off SU pitcher Missy Penna (20-4) to put UA up 4-0 in the third.
