TUCSON - University of Arizona women's basketball senior Ify Ibekwe was named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 8-13, Commissioner Larry Scott announced on Monday.
Ibekwe led the Wildcats to a win over Arizona State at McKale Center on Sunday, the team's first over its conference rival since 2005. Ibekwe, a forward from Carson, Calif., scored 22 points and grabbed 22 rebounds to lead her team to a 73-61 win over ASU, the team's first victory over the Sun Devils in 12 tries, dating back to Jan. 26, 2005.
Achieving her ninth double-double of the season in the first half, she out-rebounded her own teammates, who accounted for 17 boards. The 22 rebounds are not only a Pac-10 Conference individual high but also ties for the sixth-highest in a game this season in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball.
Offensively, Ibekwe was dominating from all distances, going 8-for-16 (.500) from the floor and also knocking down 2-of-3 three pointers. She added a block and a pair of steals in 38 minutes of play while committing just one turnover.
With the win, Arizona improved to 14-9 overall, matching its win total from last year, and 5-7 in Pac-10 play. It is Ibekwe's second-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, lasting winning it on Dec. 15, 2008, and Arizona's 37th all-time selection.
The Wildcats play at Washington State on Thursday, Feb. 17 and Washington on Saturday, Feb. 19.
