Wildcats erase nine-shot deficit to claim first victory of the season

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf erased a nine-stroke deficit to come from behind and win the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Sunday in Tempe, Ariz.

Led by Henry Liaw and Brian Prouty, who were a combined eight-strokes under par on Sunday, Arizona posted a 12-under 272 tally en route to a 54-hole total of 830 (-22).  The 272 equaled UA’s low round of the season as was the team’s 830 total and enabled the Wildcats to top runner-up UNLV by one stroke in the 16-team field.  San Diego State and Kansas State (835) and Stanford (838) rounded out the top five places.

It was Arizona’s first tournament win of the season and the 67th in school history.  UA has won at least one team event in each of the last four seasons and in that span has claimed 10 tournament titles.

Junior Henry Liaw continued his strong run over the Karsten Course with a final-round 66 (-5) that pushed him to a runner-up finish with an 11-under 202 total.  For Liaw, it was his eighth top-five finish of his career, while the 202 total was the second best of his career.  Kansas State’s Ben Kern claimed medalist honors with a 14-under 199 total.

Teammate Brian Prouty posted the best finish of his career by finishing third with a 54-hole total of 205 (-8).  His final-round 67 equaled a career low, while the eight-under tournament tally was easily the best of his career.

Each of the remaining member of the Wildcat squad also finished under par in Sunday’s final round, as Nathan Tyler carded a one-under 70 to finish tied for 28th place at 214 (+1).  Travis Esway shot a two-under 69 and finished tied for 32nd place at 215 (+2), while Josh Esler tallied a two-under 69 and finished tied for 61st place at 223 (+10).

Three other Wildcats competed in the field as individuals.  Ben Fox tallied a three-round 210 (-3) and tied for 11th place.  Trey Denton shot a five-over 218 and tied for 44th place, while Billy Whalen carded a 13-over 226 and tied for 70th place.

The event was contested at the Karsten Course, a par 71, 7.017-yard layout.  Arizona will next be in action on April 24-26 at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at Palm Desert, Calif.
