The Arizona Swimming and Diving team defeated UNLV on Friday in a dual meet at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, as 19 swimmers and divers took away 37 first-place finishes.
On the women’s side, nine swimmers earned 20 first-place honors. Sophomores Sarah Denninghoff (Tucson, Ariz.), Aubrey Peacock (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio) and junior Ellyn Baumgardner (Fairfax, Va.) kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Geer and Baumgardner went on to conquer individual titles as well with Geer’s wins in the 100 back and the 100 free and Baumgardner’s victories in the 100 and 200 breast.
Sophomore Ashley Evans (Phoenix, Ariz.) added a couple of wins for the Wildcats in the 1000 free and the 200 fly, sophomore Kait Flederbach (Carmel, Ind.) won the 50 free and the 100 fly and senior Alyssa Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) won the 200 free and the 400 IM.
Other winners included junior Monica Drake (Bloomington, Ill.) in the 500 free and Denninghoff in the 200 back.
The women concluded their portion with a win in the 200 free relay with sophomore Grace Finnegan (Columbus, Ohio), Flederbach, Anderson and Denninghoff.
The men started the day with a win as well, as sophomores Mitchell Friedemann (Allenton, Wis.), Giles Smith (Baltimore, Md.), Tommy Gutman (Jacksonville, Fla.) and senior Kevin Munsch (Kent, Wash.) earned first-place in the 200 medley relay.
Friedemann, Smith, Gutman and sophomore Jeff Amlee (Tucson, Ariz.) went on to win the 200 free relay to close out the meet.
“We definitely need relays all season,” said assistant swimming coach Tracy Duchac. “We want to make sure they are getting faster. We need to do a little work on relay changes and that will come in time, but I’m happy with where we are now.”
Gutman had the most wins of any swimmer on the day as he went on to record two other first-place finishes in the 50 free and the 100 free.
Friedemann, Smith and also added some individual wins for the Wildcats with Friedemann’s win in the 100 back and Smith’s victory in the 100 fly.
Other winners included freshman Kevin Cordes (Naperville, Ill.) in the 100 breast, sophomore Michael Sheppard (Eads, Tenn.) in the 200 back, junior Carl Mickelson (Chandler, Ariz.) in the 200 breast, sophomore Matt Barber (Kingwood, Texas) in the 500 free and senior Austen Thompson (Chandler, Ariz.) in the 400 IM.
In the diving portion of the meet, senior Ben Grado (Conifer, Colo.) took first place on both the 1m and the 3m, while senior Ainsley Oliver (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) took first on the 3m and second on the 1m.
The swimmers will return to the pool on Friday, Nov. 4 to host Wisconsin at 2 p.m. and the divers will travel to Los Angeles for the USC Diving Invite Nov.4 and 5.
