CORVALLIS, Ore. ?- The No. 2 Arizona softball team was shut out by No. 7 Oregon State on Sunday in Corvallis, 4-0.
Leslie Wolfe pitched 5.1 innings for the Wildcats, holding the Beavers to one run on three hits before Alicia Hollowell relieved her for the last two batters. Hollowell. With one out and one on in the bottom of the sixth, Hollowell committed an error that allowed shortstop Mia Longfellow to reach. Designated hitter Vanessa Iapala was intentionally walked to load the bases, and with two out, catcher Lisa Allen hit a grand slam to put the Beavers up, 4-0.
Arizona’s hitters only touched up OSU pitcher Brianna McGowan for five hits and struck out 12 times. The Cats threatened in the top of the sixth, when Caitlin Lowe and Autumn Champion led off with back-to-back singles and advanced with a double steal. But with one out, Jackie Coburn and Callista Balko both struck out. Arizona left five runners on the basepaths.
The Wildcats are now 34-8 overall and 8-6 in the Pac-10. Arizona will come home for its last Pac-10 homestand of the 2005 season from May 6-8. The Cats will take on UCLA on May 6 at 7 p.m. at Hillenbrand Stadium. On May 7, the Cats will finish the final three innings of the Washington game postponed because of rain on April 15, followed by the first of two games televised by ESPN2 against the Huskies at 6:07 p.m. Arizona will take on Washington again on Sunday, May 8 at 1 p.m. at Hillenbrand Stadium
