Sept. 30, 2010
Dear Wildcat Nation,
We are Lacey Smyth and Kim Stubbe, two of three freshman newcomers for the 2010--2011 season. We are roommates this year and are having a lot of fun getting to know each other while we adjust to all the big changes in our lives. We are always laughing and helping each other out, which is especially valuable since we are not just teammates but, more importantly, good friends. We are extremely proud to be representing the tennis team at the University of Arizona and are excited for the future with the amazing players and coaches that make up this team. At first we didn't know what to expect about our new challenges here in Tucson, but after over a month, we seem to have adapted to our busy tennis and study schedule and we just love being here!
For me, Kim, it has been a big adaptation because I moved here from Belgium, which forced me to say goodbye to my family and friends. I am so happy to have this opportunity to play tennis and receive an education because as an athlete in my home country, it is impossible to combine the two. I experience a lot of new things every day and I am really looking forward for the trip to my first tournament in Colorado.
I, Lacey, only had to drive six hours from San Diego to come here to Tucson. So, unlike Kim, I am not too far from home and will be able to play in front of my family and friends when we travel to California for matches. I have quickly learned how privileged I am by being a student-athlete and I am so grateful for all the support and help there is here. My first week here was very overwhelming, but I knew that I would get used to the change and now I absolutely love it here at Arizona! Coach Vicky and Ryan are pushing me and helping me improve and I am so motivated and excited to compete.
Together, we will be traveling on Thursday with Jane, Sarah and head coach Vicky to compete at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs. We have been working hard and are hoping to have some good results there.
So Wildcat fans, we hope you have a great weekend and you will be hearing from another team member in our next blog. We hope to bring some good tournament results back to Tucson next week.
