TUCSON, Ariz. - The San Diego State and Pepperdine men's golf teams battled the elements and the course in claiming the first-round lead Monday at the Arizona Intercollegiate.

The Aztecs and Waves each posted one-over 285 totals to share a four-stroke lead over the opening 18 holes in the 16-team tournament. Arizona's "B" team (289), Pacific (289) and Texas-El Paso (293) rounded out the top-five places.

As many as eight squalls blew over the course during play, which included two bouts with hail. The weather certainly affected play, as the first round saw just six rounds under par.

Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam leads the field with an opening 65 (-6). Arizona's Stefan Cox sits in second place, two strokes back, at four-under 67.

The Arizona varsity team, tied for sixth place at 294 (+10), was led by Tom Conran, who posted a one-over 72 and a tie for 16th place. Tarquin MacManus posted a two-over 73 and is tied for 21st place, while John Kostis is tied for 30th place at three-over 74. Jonathan Khan is tied for 38th place at four-over 75, one stroke ahead of Erik Oja, who is tied for 47th place.

In addition to Cox, the Arizona "B" tam was led by Juan Pablo Hernandez, who carded an even-par 71 and sits in a tie for seventh place. Teammate Trent Redfern was also in the top 30 after shooting a three-over 74.

Thirty-six holes were scheduled for today, but play was suspended due to darkness at 5:45 p.m. MST. Some teams have as many as nine holes to complete before the final round can begin. Play Tuesday is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

The Arizona Intercollegiate is being contested at Arizona National Golf Club, a par-71, 6,793-yard layout. Live tournament scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
