Six Arizona Women's Tennis Players Advance to Third Round at Rice Invitational

HUMBLE, Texas - The Arizona women's tennis team opened its 2002 fall season with all six singles players and Arizona's three doubles teams advancing to play again Saturday at the Rice Invitational in Humble, Texas.

In the first round of the top flight, sophomore Maja Mlakar defeated Medeja Egic of Lee College, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 1 position. Mlakar defeated Long Beach State's Laure Thomas, 6-2, 6-0, in the second round. Junior Debbie Larocque was defeated in the first round by Jenny Langer of Southern Methodist, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4. Larocque went on to win the consolation bracket in the second round, when Rice's Lauren Archer had to retire with the match tied at one game apiece. The scores of the match were 5-7 and 6-2. Sophomore Dianne Hollands, also competing in the top flight, won her match in the first round by defeating Diana Martin of Lee College, 6-1, 6-3. Hollands also won her second round match against Rice's Jeri Gonzales, 6-3, 6-2.

In the second flight, sophomores Kelly Perry and Marie-Pier Pouliot both won their first-round matches and lost their second-round matches. Perry defeated Long Beach State's Megan Biorkman, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. She lost her second-round match to Nischela Reddy of Minnesota, 6-3, 6-1, but still advances to the third round on Saturday. Pouliot won her first match, defeating Rice's Natasha Morozova by a score of 6-4, 7-6. Pouliot lost her second match to Amy Thomas of Minnesota, 6-3, 6-1.

In the third flight, freshman Kristy Randono won both her matches. In the first round, she defeated Louisiana State's Bonnie White, 6-1, 6-2. Randono went on to win her second-round match against Kandis Batiste of Minnesota, by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

In top-flight doubles action, Arizona's duo of Mlakar and Larocque defeated Egic and Martin of Lee College by a score of 8-1. Perry and Randono fell to Rice's Chao and Gonzales, 8-5. Hollands and Pouliot downed Anderson and Batiste of Minnesota, 8-1. All three doubles teams advance to the second and third rounds on Saturday.

The Wildcat women's tennis team will compete in the third round of singles, and the second and third rounds of doubles, as play continues on Saturday.
