TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 10-ranked Arizona volleyball team recorded 24 service errors en route to a 3-1 loss to San Diego State in the opening match of the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic on Thursday. Game scores were 31-33, 30-24, 30-23, 30-27. The loss snapped a seven-match winning streak Arizona held over the Aztecs and dropped the Wildcats to 2-2 on the season.
Arizona had trouble mounting much of any scoring rallies together in its home opener and except for a late rally at the end of game one would have fallen in straight games to the Aztecs. Each time Arizona seemed poised to take over a game an error from the service line cost the Cats a point and the swing in momentum.
SDSU capitalized on the Arizona miscues from the service stripe, committing only 13 errors of its own, while also playing very solid on offense. The Aztecs out hit Arizona .339 to .258 and out blocked them 10 to six.
Despite four players finishing in double digit kills, Arizona couldn't overcome the poor effort on service. Kim Glass led all players with 19 kills, but also committed 14 hitting errors along with four service errors. Jennifer Abernathy, Jolene Killough and Bre Ladd all chipped in with 11 kills apiece, but all three added to the service woes as well.
A pair of bright spots for Arizona came from the play of freshmen Tyler Bowman and Kristina Baum. Bowman came off the bench for struggling classmate Stephanie Butkus and dished out 45 assists in the contest. She also finished with three kills and four digs. Baum added nine kills on .467 hitting and a match-high tying 11 digs in the losing effort.
SDSU's Kara Moriarity paced the Aztec attack with 17 kills on .371 hitting. Megan Schauermann and Zlatina Anguelova added 12 and 10 kills, respectively, for the 3-1 Aztecs.
Arizona will look to bounce back from its loss this evening when it takes on No. 20 Santa Clara (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. SDSU will face Rhode Island (1-4) at 5 p.m. The Rams dropped their opening match of the Wildcat Classic 3-1 to Miami.
