Head Coach Lute Olson

“Great game, by both teams. There was an unbelievable intensity the whole time. It was exciting.  Good job of moving the ball and getting good looks.”

“They key was we were 38-40 from the free throw line. Up until that last one Mustafa [Shakur] missed, they were one off. Ten turnovers in the first half - in the second we only had seven. Washington had too many offensive rebounds.”

“The zone was very effective for what we wanted. Second half we played nothing but zone. It forced them to take 20, 30 seconds to find a shot. We accomplished what we wanted.”

“As quick and athletic as they are, they need to play a half court offense. I thought defensively we challenged them and their shot. We made them play how we wanted them to play.”

“I think it was confidence for Mustafa [Shakur]. He works so hard all the time. It’s not looking for shots, its having the shot be there and hitting it. I thought he played great.”

“The key is that we held them to 38.6% from the field. They shot really well from the field usually.”

“Washington is a really good basketball team. They are coached really well. They laid it all on the floor, Washington did, just like our team did. It was exciting basketball. This is what college basketball is all about.”

Arizona Players’ Postgame Quotes:

Senior Center Channing Frye:

“I had to sit down and think about what I was doing wrong.  I have to let the game come to me.  I know I can score buckets and get in there.  The team and the crowd kept encouraging me.”

“No, there wasn’t any jawing out there.  There is a level of respect among all Pac-10 teams.  I just think about myself when I’m on the court.  You have to acknowledge the crowd in a game like this.  This was one of the loudest games I’ve played in.”

“This was a sign of our team chemistry.  We don’t give up anything.  If someone is going to beat us, they will have to really beat us.  It’s going to be a battle, especially at home.”

“Free throws were huge for us.  We work on those everyday.  It’s a great opportunity for us to get free points and easy buckets.”

“With this type of competition and the bench comes in to get rebounds and points like they did, it’s big.  We need them to come in and help us out.”

Freshman Guard Jawann McClellan:

“We were down seven at halftime, and they (Washington) said they were going to come out of here with a win.  We trust our defense.  If everyone does their job, then we’ll get it done.”

“Everyone came and said that there is a lot of energy surrounding this game.  We can’t take Washington State lightly.  We have to stay focused on defense and be ready for them.”

“This was a very big win for us.  They beat us three times last year.  They had a right to be favored in this game.  We had to dig deep to pull a victory out in the end.”

Sophomore Guard Mustafa Shakur:

“We were all upset after the first half.  I just tried to tell my teammates that we weren’t going to lose.  We were down, but we have good shooters.  We stayed focused on got the job done.  Our defense made a statement, but there is still more of a statement to make.”

“The crowd was great.  The student section was really great.  We got a lot of energy from the students.”

Senior Guard Salim Stoudamire:

“The toughest team won tonight.  This is Arizona basketball.  We get up and down the court.  That’s exactly what Coach Olson teaches.”

“We knew they wouldn’t be patient.  They are an up and down team, too.  We knew if we could get to them, they would force shots.  We put guys out there that will get to them.”

“You just step up to the line and take your shot.  The free throw shooting was big.  It’s only fifteen feet away.  A lot of people rush their shot.  I take all ten seconds.”

“Channing (Frye) was also great in the second half.  That’s what seniors are supposed to do.  That’s stepping up.”

“I knew it wouldn’t be a blowout.  They are an extremely good team.  It came down to free throws in the end.  They were pretty good tonight ?- crashing the glass.  They just weren’t patient.”
