PALO ALTO, Calif.?- The No. 24 ranked University of Arizona women’s soccer team (12-2-0, 3-0-0) defeated the No. 10 ranked Stanford University Cardinal (8-3-2, 0-1-1) and earned its twelfth victory overall and third in the Pac-10.
Neither team scored through the first two halves of play. Stanford goalkeeper senior Nicole Barnhart had two saves through the first two halves, while Arizona goalkeeper freshman McCall Smith had five.
The goalkeepers stayed strong with one save each through the first overtime to send the game into double overtime. Once in the second overtime, junior Nikki David scored off of a corner kick at 107:56 to give the Wildcats the 1-0 victory.
Head Coach Tobias discussed the Wildcats thrilling overtime victory.
“It was amazing,” Tobias explained. “Obviously Stanford is a very good team. There were stretches in both halves where they controlled the ball. McCall had to make two absolutely huge saves. This was a great overall team game. We showed a lot of heart tonight.”
With its third Pac-10 victory, Arizona has set a new program record for Pac-10 victories. Tobias also talked about the state of the program, which is currently in its winningest season in the program’s history.
“We are out to try to earn respect for our program,” he said. “This is a good step because we have great respect for Stanford’s program and their coaching staff.”
He discussed the team’s mentality throughout the game.
“It was great to listen to the team before each overtime,” he explained. “They were saying that they weren’t going to settle for a tie. It came down to heart and determination and who wanted it; we wanted it.”
Arizona will next travel to Berkley, Calif. to take on No. 14 California on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
