This Week

The Wildcat women's tennis team will compete in the Fall Desert Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., on Nov. 8-10. Participating for the Wildcats are junior Debbie Larocque, sophomores Dianne Hollands and Kelly Perry, and freshman Kristy Randono.

Last Week -- 2002 Omni Hotels West Region Championship

The Arizona women's tennis team finished play at the 2002 Omni Hotels West Region Championship in San Diego, Calif., Oct. 28. In qualifying singles play, sophomore Kelly Perry and freshman Kristy Randono both advanced to the third round with wins over competitors from LSU, USD, UCLA, and Hawaii. Both advanced into the main-draw singles bracket, where both were eliminated in the first round. Perry and Randono teamed up to compete in qualifying doubles play. The duo advanced to the third round with a bye and a win over Paige Mainor and Mio Fukushima of Hawaii, 8-2. They earned a spot in the main doubles bracket, but were defeated in the first round by Sarah Gregg and Jackie Carelton of UCLA, 8-6. Junior Debbie Larocque advanced to the fourth round of bottom-half main-draw play, but was eliminated by ASU's Adria Engel, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. Sophomores Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar competed in top-half main-draw play. Hollands advanced to the third round of competition with wins over UCLA's Kate Jolson, 6-2, 6-0, and USD's Catherine Heppell, 6-1, 6-2. Hollands was eliminated in the third round, where she suffered a loss to USC's Jewel Peterson, 6-2, 6-3. Mlakar advanced to the top-half main-draw final round, but fell to USC's Jewel Peterson, 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-3. Hollands and Larocque paired up for the first time in main doubles play, but were eliminated in the first round by CSUN's Simonyan and Chillingar, 8-6.

 
 

The Riviera All-American

The Wildcats traveled to the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., to compete in the Riviera All-American on Oct. 7-13. Sophomore Marie-Pier Pouliot competed in the pre-qualifying singles bracket Sunday, Oct. 5, and was eliminated in the first round of the single-elimination tournament. She fell to Urska Juric of Missouri, 6-2, 6-2. In pre-qualifying doubles play, Pouliot teamed up with fellow sophomore Dianne Hollands. The duo was defeated in the first round by Katie Granson and Julia Smith of Duke, 8-1. In qualifying singles action on Tuesday, Oct. 8, Hollands fell in the first round to Virginia's Henriette Williams, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Junior Debbie Larocque also fell in the first round of qualifying singles action to Cristelle Grier of Northwestern, 6-0, 6-1. In main-draw doubles play on Thursday, Oct. 10, sophomore Maja Mlakar fell in the firstround to Tulsa's Alicia Pillay, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Mlakar teamed up with Larocque for main-draw doubles play, but the No. 4-seeded duo fell in the first roundto Linda Faltykova and Katia Koloynska of OK St., 8-4.
