Women's Tennis Prepares for Top-Ranked Teams

TUCSON, Ariz. -

Arizona head coach Vicky Maes and the No. 30 women’s tennis team will travel to Nashville, Tenn. for the ITA Kickoff on Saturday, Jan. 28 and Sunday, Jan. 29.

The Wildcats will play No. 17 Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday and will go on to play either No. 15 Texas, or  No. 23 Alabama on Sunday.

The Commodores have played six matches so far in 2012, earning wins over Lipscomb, Miami (OH), Austin Peay, Belmont and DePaul and falling to then-No. 12 Northwestern. Vanderbilt features three ranked players in Jackie Wu at 23, Lauren Mira at 69 and Marie Casares at 110 and three doubles teams ranked at 14, 30 and 49.

The Longhorns have played two matches this season, defeating No. 4 North Carolina, but falling to No. 9 Virginia. Texas is led by Aeriel Ellis, ranked No. 47, and Noel Scott at No. 119.

The Crimson Tide have gone 2-1 so far in January with their defeats of Wake Forest and Utah and their loss to No. 9 Virginia at the UVA Invitational. Alabama features three ranked players in Mary Anne Macfarlane at 13, Alexa Guarachi at 43 and Courtney McLane at 104 and a doubles team at No. 17.

Arizona is coming off a 6-1 win over No. 63 UC Santa Barbara in its season opener in Tucson. Sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) led the Wildcats at No. 1 singles and teamed up with senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham,England) with a victory at No. 1 doubles.

Freshmen Hailey Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) and Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) made their Arizona debut and both tallied wins in doubles and singles, respectively.

Seniors Sarah Landsman (Syosset, N.Y.) and Marks and sophomore Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) also posted wins over the Gauchos.
