Arizona Tops Oregon State in First Round, 69-54

San Jose, Calif. ?- No. 9 seed Arizona used a 12-0 scoring run in the second half to cruise to a 69-54 win over No. 8 seed Oregon State in the first round of the 2007 Pac-10 Tournament on Friday night in HP Pavilion before 3,503 fans.  Junior Ashley Whisonant scored a career-high 23 points to advance Arizona to a second round matchup against No. 1 seed and seventh-ranked Stanford on Saturday at 5 p.m.


Arizona finished the game shooting 44.2 percent (23-52) from the field, and out-rebounded the Beavers 35-28.  OSU shot 38.1 percent (16-42) from the field and committed 29 turnovers.


Senior Joy Hollingsworth scored 13 points, and sophomore Malia O’Neal added 10 points.  Sophomore Amina Njonkou finished with nine points and nine rebounds.


Jasmine Smith led Oregon State with 17 points.


Arizona took an early 5-2 lead over the Beavers at the 14:56 mark, as an aggressive Wildcat defense forced eight OSU turnovers in the early minutes.  OSU tied the game at 14-14 on a trey by Ashley Allen, but O’Neal answered right back with a jumper just inside the arc to give Arizona a 16-14 advantage at the 8:24 mark. 


Oregon State took a 17-16 lead at the 7:10 mark on a pair of free throws by Casey Nash.  Arizona went up 27-25 on a layup by Whisonant with 1:59 left in the first, but the Wildcats and the Beavers went into halftime tied up at 29-29.


Arizona shot 37.9 percent (11-29) from the field in the first, led by Whisonant’s 11 points.  OSU shot 50.0 percent (8-16) in the first, but committed 15 turnovers in a first half that featured 10 ties and seven lead changes.


OSU took a 33-29 lead at the start of the second half, as Arizona opened the half with five-straight turnovers.  A lay in by Whisonant at the 12:19 mark gave the Wildcats a 40-39 advantage.  Oregon State held a 43-41 lead at the 10:34 mark, but Arizona went on a 12-0 run in the next 4:07 to take a commanding 53-43 lead.  The Wildcats led by as many as 18 points down the stretch as Oregon State finished the game shooting 2-of-12 from the field.


The win improves Arizona to 11-20 on the season.
