The No. 1 softball team (45-4, 14-1) defeated Oregon State (29-24, 3-12), 6-4 in 11 innings. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning to win the game.
The Cats scored its first run in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Jackie Coburn reached base when she hit a double to right field. Sophomore Crystal Farley hit a single to left field and Coburn scored.
With the Cats down, 3-1, Vandergeest hit a home run to open the sixth inning. Farley's unearned run in the top of the seventh tied the game. Coburn scored another run in the eighth inning when Farley grounded out to second base. Oregon State's shortstop, Kelly Peterson scored in the eighth inning when first baseman Vanessa Iapala doubled to right field. The game remained tied until Vandergeest hit a two-run home run to left field to win the game. It was her second home run of the game.
Freshman Alicia Hollowell pitched the game for the Cats and improves to 30-3. Hollowell struck out 12 batters, her 10th double-digit strikeout performance. The game also marked the first time Arizona has gone into extra innings all season.
Arizona continues action next weekend when they hit the road to take on California on May 2 at 2 p.m. and Stanford on May 3 at 7 p.m. and again on May 4 at 1 p.m.
