TUCSON - Home runs by Lovie Jung and Leneah Manuma in a three-run third inning propelled Arizona to a 3-0 victory over California in college softball Friday night.
A crowd of 2,261 watched Arizona pitcher Jennie Finch settle down after a bit of early trouble and throw hitless ball for the final five innings to earn her 28th victory of the year.
California (45-17 overall and 9-7 in Pac-10 play) loaded the bases in the
first but came up empty on the scoreboard. Kaleo Eldridge reached on
catcher's interference, Kristen Morley hit into a fielder's choice, Candace
Harper singled and Veronica Nelson walked. But Finch struck out Courtney
Scott and got Jesssica Pamanian to pop to third.
A one-out single by Mikella Pedretti and a walk by Kristen Bayless gave Cal another runner in scoring position in the second inning.Finch got Eldridge to fly out and Morley singled, but UA left fielder Courtney Fossatti gunned down pinch-runner Forrest at the plate.
Cal's Jocelyn Forest , who had thrown a one-hitter in beating Arizona, 2-1, in Berkeley April 21, held the Cats hitless for two inings, but shortstop Lovie Jung greeted her with a home run, her 15th of the year, to lead off the Arizona third.
Courtney Fossatti singled on the next pitch and an out later Leneah Manuma hit her 18th homer, a towering shot a half-dozen feet shy of the 45-foot facade of Ina Gittings Gym about 35 feet beyond the right-field fence to make it 3-0.That chased Forest and the Bears brought on Cassie Bobrow.
Arizona improved to 46-7 overall and 13-3 in league action. UA plays Stanford Saturday and Sunday to close its home season. The Bears travel to ASU for games Saturday and Sunday.
NOTES... Manuma's home run was her first since March 30... Finch tossed her 17th shutout of the year... The two home runs gave the Cats' 82 on the season...
