OKLAHOMA CITY ?- Backed by 13 first-place votes, Arizona will open the 2007 season the same way it finished in 2006 as the No. 1 team in the country, according to the ESPN.com/USA Softball Preseason Top 25 poll announced today by the Amateur Softball Association.

The defending NCAA Champion Wildcats return the bulk of their offensive power but will be without All-American Alicia Hollowell who threw every inning for Arizona during the World Series and set the World Series record with a total of 64 strikeouts.

In addition to UA, five other Pac-10 squads ?- UCLA, Arizona State, Oregon State, Stanford and Cal ?- are included among the top 10 teams.  Washington may be considered one of the strongest teams ever to be picked to finish seventh in its conference, as it checks in nationally at No. 11.

Arizona also has 2007 non-conference games scheduled against ranked teams in No. 4 Northwestern, No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 16 Oklahoma, No. 18 Baylor and No. 22 North Carolina State.

In years following national championships, Arizona has won five of six Pac-10 titles.  The only year UA failed to defend its national championship by winning the Conference was 2002.  Additionally, UA has reached the national title game in each year following a national championship.

Arizona begins its title defense on Feb. 9 in Tempe, Ariz., against Ohio State as part of the Kajikawa Classic.
