June 4, 2002
Cunningham, Arizona's leader in a number of offensive categories following the 2002 season, was selected with the first pick in the 13th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hassey, who is the son of former Arizona All-American and Major Leaguer Ron Hassey, went six rounds later to the Toronto Blue Jays in the 19th round. The pair were the only two players off the 2002 Arizona roster selected on the first day.
A four-year letterwinner and a 2002 honorable mention All-Pac-10 honoree, Cunningham recently completed his final season at Arizona with a .273 average, while leading the team in home runs (13), RBIs (53), doubles (13), triples (4) and slugging percentage (.566). Cunningham was not drafted out of Bishop Amat High School in 1999.
Hassey, a graduate of Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, was also a four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats. The shortstop is the only player to have started all 55 games in 2002. He led the Wildcats in runs scored (50), hits (75), total bases (116) and stolen bases (15). He also hit nine home runs during his senior season, second only to Cunningham's 13. Hassey was Arizona's lone representative on the 2002 All-Pac-10 team.
The draft, which will conclude on Wednesday, finished the first day through the 22nd round.
