TUCSON-- Arizona freshman Jason Zafiros won the first ever Arizona Classic tournament by default, after teammate Francois Van der Merwe was unable to compete due to injury.
A native of Bradenton, Fla., Zafiros finished the weekend with 3-0 record in singles play and 2-0 record in doubles play. Zafiros and Van der Merwe were unable to play in the doubles semifinals.
Also in action for the Wildcats today was freshman Ola Bakke who defeated Laura of Scottsdale Community College in three sets. The scores were 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Bakke finished the weekend with a 3-1 singles record.
"Ola played well today," head coach Tad Berkowitz said. "It's important to get the freshman valuable experience at the collegiate level. I thought this was a good experience for both Jason and Ola."
The first annual Arizona Fall Classic was a success and the hope is that it turns into an annual tournament attracting solid competitors.
"The first annual Arizona Classic was a successful," Berkowitz said. "The hope would be that in a few years we have a Round of 32 to start."
Arizona will be in action again on October 3, 2008 at the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
