WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Junior catcher Stacie Chambers was named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week and freshman pitcher Kenzie Fowler was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Chambers, a native of Glendale, Ariz., hit .500 in a three-game sweep of Stanford with three home runs and seven RBI. In the first game of the series, Chambers hit a run-scoring double in a 3-2 win, while also nabbing 10 putouts behind the plate defensively. She then blasted two home runs for three RBI in a 10-2 run-rule victory on Saturday. In the final game of the series, Chambers added a three-run homer to help Arizona earn a 5-4 win. Overall she holds a conference-leading batting average of .500.
Fowler picked up three wins in the circle over the weekend - the only Pac-10 pitcher to do so - in the sweep of Stanford. In the first two games of the series the Tucson, Ariz. native tossed two complete game victories. In game one Fowler struck out nine and allowed four hits in a 3-2 win. She followed on Saturday by tossing a two-hitter and had plenty of support on the offensive side as the Wildcats won 10-2 in six innings. In the series finale she entered in relief and gave up just one run in 4.2 innings pitched to earn a 5-4 victory, her third of the weekend. On the season the freshman holds a 24-5 record.
For Chambers this is her third career Player of the Week honor and it is Fowler's second career accolade. Overall Arizona now has a league leading 130 Pac-10 Player of the Week selections.
Arizona hosts Oregon State for a three-game set beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
