Esway is Cats’ top finisher at one-under 212

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team carded a final-round 287 (+3) and finished in 10th place Tuesday at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.

Arizona’s effort Tuesday saw two players post rounds at par or better, but it wasn’t enough for the team to move up in the final standings.  UA’s 287 tally was its worst round of the tournament that saw the squad finish with a five-under-par 847 total and in 10 place in the 12-team field.  Host Alabama won the event with a 33-under total of 818, seven strokes ahead of Texas Tech.  Texas (828), Brigham Young (830) and Georgia State (833) rounded out the top-five places.

Travis Esway was the lone Wildcat to finish the event under par, as the junior’s final-round 72 led to a 212 (-1) total and a tie for 27th place.  He finished two strokes ahead of teammate Trey Denton, who carded a one-under 70 Tuesday to notch UA’s low round of the day.  Denton tied for 35th place.

Freshman Pedro Oriol tied for 42nd place with a three-over 216 total, while Nathan Tyler and Ben Fox tied for 54th and 57th places, respectively.  Tyler carded a 10-over 223 and Fox posted a 13-over 226.  Alabama’s Joseph Sykora claimed individual medalist honors with a 14-under 199 total.

Arizona’s five-under tally was its first under-par tournament tally of the season and a stroke improvement in relation to par.  UA golfers collected eight rounds at par or better during the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate, after getting just one in the season-opening event.

The Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate was contested at the Old Overton Club, a par 71, 6,958-yard layout.

Arizona will next be in action, Oct. 22-24, at the Isleworth Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
