Arizona vs. Long Beach State

Dec. 12, 2006

Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini

Opening statement

“That was a much needed win for the team. We needed to set the tone defensively and that was our best half court game.  Our schedule is so tough at home and on the road so it was good to get everyone in and see them play hard and have fun again.”

What she was thinking when Jessica Arnold went down

“It was really scary.  When she started moving I felt a lot better.  For her to come back says a lot about her toughness.  It is good to see her play like herself again.  She had a really good game against Utah too.  Joy (Hollingsworth) had a great game.  Our assist players and our post players are coming together.”

On the guard play

“It has been better.  Against New Mexico it was not very good.  We have challenged them to be better.  Rebounding has also been a struggle.”

On the tough schedule

“It wasn’t supposed to be as tough as it is.  Over a year ago when I scheduled it, Texas A&M was not ranked and Polkey (Shawntinice Polk) hadn’t passes away.  We have had tough times but the team has stayed together.  We have won some close games and we have lost some close games.  It was big to win this game.”

On planning on using a deep bench

“Yeah I do.  We have a very deep team and we are still missing a couple of good players.  Rheya Neabors and Kelsey Burns will be back in a couple of weeks.”

On Suzy Bofia’s play

“Suzy can be very, very good.  It is a big adjustment for her especially in the physical aspect.  It hurts her that her sister (Beatrice) isn’t playing both emotionally and psychologically.”

On playing against her former team

“My time at Long Beach was really fun.  I loved it there.  I was fortunate to have great players and coaches.  Mary (Hegarty) has done a good job.  Last year they won the Big West Title but this year they are a young team.  Once we don’t play each other I will be rooting for them to do well.”

On starting the Pac-10 this soon

“It seems pretty early.  This morning we had the first Pac-10 conference call and every team has played a tough schedule.  It is important for us to go in strong.  We have a tough start at Arizona State and then at Cal and Stanford, all three ranked teams.  Our tough games played early should help us in the end.”

On the team’s next opponent, Fresno State

Fresno is a good they showed us that last year and now it’s pay back time.”

Arizona Student-Athlete Quotes

Junior Guard Jessica Arnold

“At the beginning of the year I wasn’t playing too well, my shots weren’t falling. Now I’ve started to worry more about getting my teammates involved, and the game hasn’t been coming to me.”

On her first-half injury

“The doctors don’t know what it is yet, specifically, but I’ll be fine.”

Senior Guard Joy Hollingsworth

“After the loss at Utah it was important for us to back and protect our house. We never want to lose on our home floor.”

“I think that the thing that changed in the second half was our defense. We started getting into the lanes more and that created offense.”

Long Beach State Head Coach Mary Hegarty

On the team’s 32 turnovers:

“We just turned the ball over too much for no reason. It wasn’t anything they (Arizona) did. That has been our Achilles’ heel all season long.”

“When we didn’t turn the ball over and we moved the ball, we got good shots and made some buckets.”

On Arizona’s speed and quickness:

“We’re not a fast team. We have average speed at best. I told the team that we’re getting on the freeway going 50 mph and everyone else is going 80 mph. We have to play smart to make up for that. We can’t mimic the other teams’ speed.”

“I was pleased that we out-rebounded them, especially with them being a taller team.”

“They (Arizona) did exactly what we scouted and what we saw on film. They are very athletic and like to attack. They are a streaky team and when they get going, they can be very tough.”
