TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Wildcat women’s soccer team will participate in the Sun Devil Desert Classic, hosted by Arizona State, this weekend in Tempe. The Wildcats are set to face Pepperdine at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 and the University of Houston at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

Previous Game: On Sunday, Arizona (2-2) traveled to Omaha, Neb. and came out with a 3-1 victory over the Creighton Bluejays (1-4-1). In the second win of the season for the Wildcats, the offense outshot the Bluejays 17-8, with junior Jazmin Ponce leading the way with five shots. Ponce also registered two goals in the game along with senior Susana Melendez scoring one goal. Goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman had four saves in the win.

About the Waves: Pepperdine (4-1) was both at home and away in the previous weekend taking on San Diego State (5-0) and Indiana (3-2). While on the road to San Diego, Calif. the Waves picked up its first loss of the season in a 1-0 decision against the undefeated San Diego State Aztecs. The Waves then earned its first shutout of the season defeating Indiana (5-0) on home turf. Sophomore Amanda LeCave scored four of the five goals for Pepperdine in the victory.

About the Cougars: Houston (2-3) came out of the weekend with a win and a loss while playing the Louisiana schools. The Cougars picked up its second victory of the season in a 2-1 defeat over the University of Louisiana (3-2). Against Louisiana State (3-1), the Cougars were unable to score in a 2-0 decision making it their third loss of the season.

Ponce Leading the Pac: Jazmin Ponce leads the Pac-12 with the number one slot in both the shots and shots on goal categories. Ponce has a total of 21 shots with 11 of those shots on goal thus far in the season. In the points per game category, Ponce ranks number four in the Pac-12 with a total of three goals scored in just four games.

Goal Leaders: The Wildcats are one goal away from surpassing the eight goal total mark from the previous 2011 season. Ponce leads the team in goals scored with three while both Susana Melendez and Ana-Maria Montoya have two goals.

Freshmen: Of the eight freshmen on the 2012 roster, defender Sheridan Cohen is the only freshman who has started all four games this season, tallying a total of 364 minutes. Fellow freshmen teammates with minutes under their belts are Hannah Wong with 152 minutes, Sheaffer Skadsen with 48 minutes, Alexa Montgomery with 34 minutes, and Hayley Estopare with 21 minutes. The eight freshmen composing the Wildcat roster were born in the same year that the Arizona women’s soccer program began its first season, 1994.

Selman Continues to Inspire: The Wildcat women's soccer team will continue to wear a pre-game warm-up shirt with the No. 13 in honor of Lexe Selman, a member of UA's 2012 signing class. Selman recently finished up her fourth round of chemotherapy treatment for Leukemia, which she was diagnosed with on April 20 of this year. Vowing to Selman and her family to keep her dreams of playing at the collegiate soccer level alive, Arizona head coach Lisa Oyen has promised to hold a roster spot and number until she is able to play.

Up Next: The Wildcats return to Tucson to host the Arizona Cats Classic on Friday, September 14, and Sunday, September 16. Arizona will face Florida International on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Loyola Marymount on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. on Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
