The No. 1 Arizona softball team (44-4, 13-1) defeated Oregon State (29-33, 3-11), 10-2, in five innings. Junior Wendy Allen pitched five innings for the Cats, improving her record to 12-1. Allen struck out two batters and gave up five hits. Offensively, Allen was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
The Cats scored two runs in the first inning. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a double to left field to score freshman Autumn Champion. Allen reached base off of an error by shortstop Kelly Petersen and sophomore Courtney Fossatti scored an unearned run.
Arizona scored two more runs in the third inning. Senior Lovie Jung hit a single to right field to reach first base. Allen hit a double to right field, and Jung scored. Junior Erin Palomarez hit a double to center field, and Allen scored.
In the top of the fourth inning, senior Lisha Ribellia scored from third base off of a single to center field by Fossatti. Two of the Oregon States runs came in the fourth inning.
The Cats went up for good in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Vandergeest reached base when pitcher Dena DuBois walked her. Allen then doubled to center field. Sophomore Jackie Coburn reached base off of an error by DuBois, Allen advanced to third, and Vandergeest scored. Allen scored when Ribellia singled to right field and eventually stole home. Coburn scored from third when Champion singled to center field. Fossatti singled, and Champion scored from second.
Arizona will face Oregon State tomorrow at 1 p.m.
