NCAA WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

June 1-7, 2006

Don E. Porter ASA Hall of Fame Stadium

Oklahoma City, Okla.

Game 1: Arizona 3, Oregon State 2 (9 Innings)

ARIZONA HEAD COACH MIKE CANDREA

General comment:

“Wow, what a game. Great way I guess to kick off the College World Series, but it feels really good to be on the winning side of that game because it was a tough one with the rain delay.  We had many opportunities, we just could not cash in on a key hit.  We finally got the key hit.  It was a very good ballgame and I thought Oregon State played very well.  It was two very good pitchers going at it ?-  the typical great college ballgame.”

On concerns about his team’s mistakes:

“You always have concerns because I have preached to this team all year that its going to be pitching and defense that wins at the College World Series.  And we have to play good defense, but when you can make an error or two and get out of it with a victory you learn from it and move on.  This team has played very good defense all year and it was uncharacteristic, but things happen and you move forward from there.”

ARIZONA SENIOR ALICIA HOLLOWELL

On her error in the sixth inning that allowed the tying run to score:

“I just wanted to shut it down from there.  We had two outs and I did not want to let anything else happen.”

ARIZONA JUNIOR CAITLIN LOWE

On having the heart of the order up in the last inning:

“It definitely made a difference.  When I came up in the last inning and got on base I knew that if I got to second base Kristi would be able to bring me home.”

On sending her sister (Oregon State second baseman Paige Lowe) to the losers’ bracket:

“It was really hard because I don’t want to be the one to send her to the losers’ bracket.  But somebody had to come out on top and I was glad that we were able to get the job done.”

ARIZONA JUNIOR KRISTIE FOX

On her last at bat:

“She was really staying inside on me early in the count and then worked me away.  I went up there with the mindset to hit the ball really hard ?- a line drive or on the ground ?- because we have such great speed.  Caitlin is so fast that I knew if I got it to the outfield she was going to score.  I was just making sure I was keeping my eye on the ball and I knew I was going to get a good pitch.”
