Philadelphia, Pa. ?- Arizona’s women’s tennis team did not compete on the final day of Penn’s Cissie Leary Invitational. The tournament concluded Sept. 26, but results were not made available until Monday morning.
Senior Kelly Perry reached the quarterfinals in her first tournament of the year, losing to Penn’s Julia Koulbitskaya 6-4, 6-4. Koulbitskaya finished the tournament as the runner-up to Maryland’s Ramona But 6-0, 6-2.
Junior Iza Ferreira won her first round match, but consequently lost her next two matches, 6-0, 6-0, in both the second round and her second round consolation match.
Following her first round-bye, freshman Camelia Todorova won her first collegiate match, but then lost in the round of 16. Following the loss, Todorova defeated Harvard’s Cindy Chu, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Todorova and Chu played together in the doubles bracket, losing in the first round. The pair won two matches before falling to Columbia’s Marlena Hall and Christina Kim 8-5.
Perry and Ferreira, Arizona’s doubles pair for the tournament, defeated Penn’s Raluca Ciochina and Kate Williams. The quarterfinal round saw the Arizona pair against Harvard’s Melissa Anderson and Preethi Mukundan, with the Wildcat duo coming on top 8-4. Perry and Ferreira faced another Harvard pair in the semifinals, but this time it was the top-seeded Elisa O’Rianan and Courtney Bergman, who ended the Wildcat bid of a three-match win streak with an 8-1 victory.
The Arizona’s women’s tennis team next competes at the CAL Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., Oct. 1-3.
