TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team moved up two spots on the leader board Saturday, finishing in 10th place at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Wildcats, playing in its first event of the 2009-10 season, were in 12th place a day earlier when lightning suspended play during the second round. Arizona managed a second-round 290 and closed with a 302 (+14) to cap the 54-hole event with an 888 (+24) tally.
UNLV topped the 17-team field by 16 strokes with a 21-under 843 total. San Diego State (859), Brigham Young (867) and Baylor (868) rounded out the top four places.
Individually, Arizona was led by Tarquin MacManus, who earned his first top-20 finish of the season. The junior from Cairns, Queensland, Australia, carded rounds of 71, 68 and 76 to finish in a tie for 13th place with a 215 (-1) total. He was the only Wildcat to post two rounds at par or better, and finished seven strokes behind a UNLV duo - Derek Ernst and Colby Smith - that shared individual medalist honors at eight-under 208.
Senior Rich Saferain tied for 41st place at 222 (+6), and his closing 74 was UA's low round of the day. Jonathan Khan and John Kostis tied for 66th place at 228 (+12), while Trent Redfern tied for 75th place at 231 (+15).
Three Wildcats also competed in the event as individuals. Sophomore Kenji Hernandez tied for 41st place after carding a career-low six-over 222.Junior Tom Conran tied for 69th place at 13-over229 and freshman Stefan Cox tied for 71st place at 230 (+14).
The 55th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate was contested at the UNM Championship Course, a par-72, 7,562-yard layout.
Arizona will next be in action Oct. 5-6 at the Wolfpack Classic in Reno, Nev.
