TUCSON, Ariz. ?- In its season opener at home, the 18th-ranked University of Arizona women’s soccer team (1-0-0) defeated the University of Missouri (0-1-0), 2-0. Senior Mallory Miller scored both of the game’s goals, while senior Nikki David and junior Erin Bevacqua each earned an assist.

The Wildcats and the Tigers battled through the beginning of the first half with each side having its opportunities. With 32:21 remaining in the half, David subbed into the game and almost immediately passed the ball to Miller who then placed the ball in the back of the net to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute later, Bevacqua passed the ball through two defenders to give Miller an open shot and the Wildcats a two-goal advantage.

Although the Wildcats had 11 corner kick opportunities, including seven in the first half, they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net as a result of a corner kick.

Sophomore goalkeeper McCall Smith played all 90 minutes and earned her first shutout of the season by posting five saves.

Freshman defender Brianna Caceres was the lone freshman to start the season opener. Freshman London King and Gianna DeSaverio saw time off of the bench.

Head Coach Dan Tobias was pleased with the Wildcats’ season opener.

“We played well in the first half,” Tobias said. “We scored a couple of nice goals and did a nice job of keeping the ball. We weren’t as threatening in the offensive third as we’d like to be. We didn’t come out as well in the second half.”

Tobias felt Missouri adjusted well in the second half.

“Missouri is a strong team,” Tobias explained. “They were able to change a few things in their formation. They were unlucky to not have scored in the second half. That half was not what we wanted it to be. We still walked away with a win and a shutout in our season opener and we’ll take it.”

The Wildcats will next take on Pepperdine on the road.

“It doesn’t get any easier on the road against Pepperdine,” Tobias said. They are always a good attacking team. We are excited to play an opponent like that. We will enjoy this victory and be ready for Sunday.”

Arizona will play in their first road game at Pepperdine on Sun., Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. in Malibu, Calif.
