Arizona vs. Nicholls State

Nov. 14, 2006

Head Coach Joan Bonvicini:

“I’m very pleased that we won our first game and our home opener. I think we showed that we have a lot of weapons and a lot of different lineups that we can use. I thought we played ok, but I have seen us play a lot sharper. We missed some easy shots around the basket and had some early turnovers, but I attribute that to first game jitters. We just want to clean up some things defensively and execute a little bit better offensively.”

“I thought defensively (Nicholls State) was pretty good and pretty aggressive. We made some adjustments at halftime, particularly trying to take care of the ball better. But I was pleased with our aggressiveness.”

On Arizona’s Rebounding:

“The person that I have always been impressed with rebounding is Joy Hollingsworth. For a guard she comes in (to the game) and bangs (around) with everyone. I’m also pleased with Amina (Njonkou), she had another double-double and she is just a completely different player this season.  She did a great job.”

Arizona Player Quotes

Senior guard Joy Hollingsworth

“I thought our intensity was good throughout the game. I think we got our first game jitters out. We need to continue to play with more intensity because we are going to play better teams.”

“I can be a better leader out on the floor. I want to be an extension of Coach B (Bonvicini). That’s something I am trying to get better at.”

On the upcoming BTI Classic in College Park, Md.:

“We’re going back East to play some good teams. We know we are going to have to step our game up and play more physical. There aren’t going to be a lot of ticky-tack fouls. We have to play tough and physical.”

On playing defending national champion Maryland on Saturday:

“It is super exciting. They are a great team. We want to go out and compete. But, we don’t want to overlook George Washington (on Friday). We want to go out in that game and send a message; set the tone for the weekend.”

Junior guard Ashley Whisonant:

On the upcoming trip to Maryland for the BTI Classic:

“We’re going back there with a whole team. Last year we went and played Maryland with only seven or eight players, I think. We didn’t really have anyone taller than 6-1. This year we have more height and a deep bench.”

On returning to her home state this weekend:

“I’m always looking forward to go home. It’s fun to be able to play in front of my family.”
