Jennifer Abernathy, a 5-11 sophomore outside hitter for the University of Arizona (11-12, 5-7 Pac-10), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week.
Abernathy, who was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week earlier on Monday, helped the Wildcats to an upset of then-sixth-ranked California the evening after Arizona took eighth-ranked Stanford to four games before falling. She posted a double-double with 19 kills and 11 digs against the Cardinal, hitting .455 and adding two aces and two blocks.
Abernathy tallied a career-high 24 kills against the Golden Bears, in addition to recording nine digs. She hit .588 on four errors and 34 swings, en route to handing Cal its first three-game loss of the season.
She averaged 6.57 points, 6.14 kills and 2.86 digs while hitting at a .522 clip (43-8-77), significantly upping her current season averages of 3.13 kills per game, 1.79 digs per game and a .213 hitting percentage.
Abernathy joins former Wildcat Shannon Torregrosa as the only two players at Arizona to be recognized with the national award. Torregrosa was honored by the AVCA during the 2001 season.
