LAFAYETTE, La. ?- The No. 2 Arizona softball team shut out No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette at Ragin’ Cajuns Park on Friday, 2-0.
Junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell tossed her 16th win of the season in a one-hit, 11-strikeout performance. With the win, Hollowell lowered her season ERA to 0.35 and upped her strikeouts to 231 on the year.
Caitlin Lowe and senior Jackie Coburn led the Wildcats’ offense. Lowe went two-for-three in the game with a run, and Coburn got Arizona’s lone RBI.
The Cats took an early lead in the top of the first, when Lowe led off the game with a single to second. Autumn Champion put down a sacrifice bunt to move Lowe to second, and Fox grounded out to move Lowe to third. With two out, Coburn hit a single down the right field line to score Lowe and give Arizona a one-run edge.
In the third, Champion led off with a double down the left field line and reached third on a groundout by Fox to third base. Freshman Callista Balko reached on an error by Cajuns third baseman Crystal George, which allowed Champion to score the Cats’ final run of the night.
Louisiana-Lafayette senior pitcher Brooke Mitchell, who pitched last year’s shutout win over Arizona to keep the Cats from the College World Series, got the loss for the Ragin’ Cajuns despite fanning nine Arizona hitters.
The Wildcats will take on Louisiana-Lafayette again on Saturday at Ragin’ Cajuns Park at 5 p.m. MST.
