TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona volleyball team kicked off its fall camp today with a packed schedule. The Cats, who have a nice assortment of veterans and newcomers, look to improve upon last season's momentum-building NCAA appearance in 2010.
The team of 15 got things started today with weight lifting session followed by a two-hour morning practice, then a break for lunch and later an afternoon practice at the Richard Jefferson Gym.
"I feels good to be back on the court and have everyone together again," said head coach Dave Rubio. "We're excited to be able to work with the tremendous talents on our team this season."
UA will be supported be its strong senior base throughout the year. Paige Weber, Tiffany Owens and Whitney Dosty were Pac-10 Honorable Mention selections in 2009 and are expected to be three of the top players in the conference again. Arizona will also be helped by a variety of players who have been in the system as well as newcomers.
Danielle Holloway and Courtney Karst look to be part of a potential starting lineup, but several newcomers including Candace Nicholson, Cursty Jackson and Marketa Hanzlova could vie for significant playing time as well.
The Cats will also be getting back to a team-bonding tradition that Coach Rubio started when he first came to Arizona. On Friday, the team will travel up to Prescott, Ariz. for four days to grow closer as a team and improve upon their techniques on the court.
Arizona will begin its season on the road, taking on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Aug. 27 as part of the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
