TUCSON, Ariz. ?- No. 20 Georgia Tech defeated Winthrop 3-1 (30-26, 36-38, 30-26, 30-24) to earn third place in the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic at the McKale Center this evening. The Eagles, who went 0-3 on the tournament, finished in fourth place.
The Yellow Jackets combined for a .211 hitting percentage on the match, compared to the .173 of Winthrop. Georgia Tech also out-blocked the Eagles 15-4.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Callie Miller with 17 kills and 11 blocks, followed by Laura DeMichelis and Talisa Kellogg with 15 kills apiece. Setter Lindsey Laband finished with 54 assists and 13 digs, while libero Jennifer Randall tallied 21 digs.
For Winthrop, Tori Grafeman paced the team with 16 kills, followed by Mary Hock with 15 and Taryn Surbaugh with 12. Setter Chandra Ginest dished out 45 assists, while Beth Waggoner led the team with 13 digs.
