TEMPE, Ariz. ?- The fifth-ranked Arizona softball team (1-0) defeated Cal State Northridge (1-1), 8-0, in five innings to start off its 2006 season.  The game was the first of six games for UA in the Kajikawa Classic.

Sophomore Taryne Mowatt (1-0) tossed five shutout innings, giving up two hits in her fourth career shutout.  Mowatt tied her career high with 12 strikeouts.  CSUN’s Selena Salazar (0-1) drew the loss for her four-inning, eight-run effort.

UA scored two runs in the first, as junior Caitlin Lowe started the attack in the first with a single to left and stole second, prior to senior Autumn Champion’s bunt single.  With runners on the corners, Champion stole second and junior Kristie Fox drove in her first run of the year with a fielder’s choice.  Next, Mesa earned her first RBI as a Wildcat with a fielder’s choice of her own, bringing in Champion.

The Wildcats did not score again until the bottom of the third, when sophomore Callist Balko hit her first home run of the season, a two-run blast.  Last year, Balko socked the first home run of her career against Tennessee-Chattanooga in UA’s Kajikawa Classic game.  Two walks later, freshman Sam Banister hit her first collegiate round-tripper, bringing Arizona’s lead to 7-0.

The Wildcats shined on defense, as well, where they made no errors.  Although CSUN had only one runner in scoring position all game, Champion preserved the shutout, robbing Matador right fielder Jan Moshier of a home run in the top of the fourth.

Arizona tacked on its eighth run, when Fox and Mesa each singled to center, and a pair of groundouts brought Fox around to score.

Arizona takes on Northwestern (1-0) at ASU’s Farrington Stadium at 7 p.m. tonight.
