Hey there GymCat fans!

This past weekend has been very exciting us! Our record has made a complete turnaround after competing twice within three days. We took on the challenge and proved ourselves to be the team that we know we are. We started off the weekend here at home against the Brown Bears and Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils for our first tri-meet of the season. While McKale was busy with each team putting on a great show, the GymCats were doing what was needed to be done. Although there were mishaps on bars, we were able to come back with extreme strength and scored above 49.00 on the other three events. Friday night was exhilarating with some outstanding performances by many of the girls: Dee (Deanna Graham) and Sarah (Tomczyk) each getting 9.875s on their vaults, Beamer (Briana Bergeson) and Brit (Britnie Jones) putting up 9.9s on beam, and finishing the night with Sarah and Becca (Rebecca Cardenas) receiving 9.925's for their entertaining floor sets.

On Saturday morning, we rolled out of bed and headed to Texas for our second meet of the weekend. After arriving in Dallas, we went to Katie's (Matusik) family home where we were able to eat some great pre-meet dinner, mingle with some future and former GymCats, and relax. It was a perfect night for us to just hang out and get ready for the next day's competition. A special thank you goes out to the entire Matusik family in Texas, thanks for being so supportive!!

As we arrived in Denton at the Texas Women's Magee Arena Sunday afternoon, we knew that our aches and pains from earlier in the weekend would have to disappear...after all we were on a business trip, as Bill reminds us frequently. From watching the gymnastics we put out on the floor, no one would have guessed that we were competing only 48 hours before that. Each GymCat performed with excitement and poise that shined to the highest degree. We started on Bars, where although the line-ups were switched up, we did a great job of hitting all routines and starting the meet off strong--the streak of struggling was finally finished. Dee was placed into the line-up, as well as myself, for the first time in each of our careers, and Lex (Alexis Greene) scored a 9.9 to tie her career-high score. Personally for me, being a senior and finally being able to contribute to the team score was a dream come true. I did something to help out a team I love so much and I am so thankful that all the hard work over the past four years had finally paid off! Thanks to the team and coaches for all the support too! :) After being successful on the first event, we continued the excitement to vault where everyone hit again, and the scores certainly showed it. Next it was thd floor team which sustained a great floor score after performing some impressive routines, with Sarah going 9.9, and we headed to beam which finished the competition with a solid performance from the whole team. Three girls, Beamer, Katie, and Brit all scored 9.85 to help keep a three-meet streak of scoring above 49.00 on beam. Overall, the meet in Texas was a huge success and we finally were able to hit and not count a fall into the final team score.

After the exhausting and exhilarating weekend we have another electrifying competition this weekend. This Friday we are home again against our rivals the ASU Sun Devils at 7 p.m. in the McKale Center. The meet will be a "Dual in the Desert" to claim the best college gymnastics in the state. It will be a Rivalry Red Out so find your red clothing and wear it in the stands. We will be dedicating this meet to our dear friend and supporter, Kim Bird, founder of Tumbleweeds Gymnastics here in Tucson, who passed away last year of Valley Fever. In honor of Kim, all club gymnasts who attend, wear your club competition jacket and receive $1 off your admission!

See you Friday night!!

Your GymCat, Erica
