IRVINE, Calif. - For the Arizona Wildcat women's tennis team, play wrapped up at the UC-Irvine Invitational on Sunday, after being rained out on Saturday.
Freshman Lacey Smyth won the gold singles title after defeating Byron from UC-Irvine in the championship match, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6. Junior Debora Castany lost in the blue flight singles final against Smith from UC-Irvine, 6-2, 6-3. In the consolation singles final, freshman Kim Stubbe lost 6-3, 6-2 to Kwan from UC-Irvine.
"It was a difficult day to play after no activity yesterday, but we were happy to see Lacey win another tournament," head coach Vicky Maes said. "Regardless, I thought we looked a bit rusty and I had hoped to see more energy overall. We simply cannot afford to come out flat like that. Overall, we got to play a lot of tennis this fall and we have a very exciting season to look forward to."
The Cats will play next on Jan. 21 in Tucson, as the team takes on Northern Arizona at 12:00 p.m.
