TUCSON--Arizona wrapped up most of its spring work with a 90-play scrimmage Saturday afternoon that had enough good things on both sides to impress coaches, notably the head man.

"It was a good scrimmage, and I was pleased with our workouts all spring. We have a chance to spread things out with looks and the different parts of the offense we can utilize," head coach Mike Stoops said.

"Overall I'm really pleased. (Quarterback) Willie (Tuitama) is getting a good grasp of the offense. We need to get bigger and stronger up front. If we do that, it can be a good season for us," he said.

The offensive units ran 93 plays in the two-hour workout before a Spring Game crowd of about 9,500 in Arizona Stadium, piling up 551 yards in total offense, but the defense shined, too, with interceptions by safeties Michael Klyce and Brandon Tatum, the former returned 39 yards, plus held the offense on nearly a dozen drive stops.

Tuitama threw the ball 39 times, completing 24 for 292 yards and two scores, but suffered the two picks. He threw TD strikes of 23 yards to Anthony Johnson and 10 yards to H-back Brandon Lopez.

The Cats added an effective 129 rushing yards to passing totals of 430, with three backs each getting solid positive figures -- Chris Jennings with eight totes for 39 yards, Xavier Smith with six for 31 and Terry Longbons with seven for 45 thanks to the longest running play of the day, 19 markers.

Jennings led all receivers with seven receptions, while Terrell Turner had the most yards with 72 on six grabs.

Play calling was conservative, as expected. The Cats' offense doesn't have a recorded history, at least with the current players operating the spread system installed by offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes. Still, a 70:23 split for passing and running plays gives a big idea of where the focus lies.

Redshirt freshman defensive end Ricky Elmore had a good showing with two sacks among his five tackles, while sophomore linebacker Xavier Kelley led all defenders with 10 hits.

Field goal kicker Jason Bondzio hit four of five tries, while punter Keenyn Crier, who had boomed the ball in an earlier scrimmage, came down to earth some with four kicks for a 34-yard average.

Arizona will meet on the practice field Sunday for its 15th and final session of spring practice in what coaches expect will be more of a walk-through and final adjustment work on fundamentals.
