Arizona goes 2-0 in CSU-Bakersfield Invitational
For the first time in 2008, the Arizona volleyball team lost a set and responded with a match victory. The Wildcats beat Fresno State 3-1 in their second game of the CSU-Bakersfield Invitational and play CSU-Bakersfield tonight at 7:00 for the tournament championship.
In Arizona’s (7-1) first six wins this season, they won 3-0, but it took four sets to take down the Bulldogs, 25-17, 28-30, 25-17, 25-14.
Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Dosty led the Wildcats with 12 kills, a .321 hitting percentage and four blocks, while senior outside hitter Brooke Buringrud added 10 kills with a .261 hitting percentage.
Arizona won the first set, but drop the second for only its fourth lost set of the season, with the other three coming in the team’s lone match loss to Santa Clara.
As a team the Wildcats outhit Fresno with a .276 hitting percentage compared to .087 clip for Fresno State.
Arizona got good contribution from a number of players. Sophomore setter Paige Weber recorded a season-high 46 assists and sophomore Tiffany Owens was one kill away from her third double-double of the season. Junior Jacy Norton added nine kills, sophomore Stephanie Snow posted six kills with three blocks and junior Alanna Resch contributed a team-high 14 digs in the win.
Arizona continues the CSU-Bakersfield Invitational tonight with the tournament championship game against the host Roadrunners at 7:00 p.m.
