Wins four-hole playoff with an eagle-3

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Anything you can do I can do better.

What started as a three-man playoff for individual medalist honors turned into a head-to-head shot-making battle to close the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate Tuesday at Arizona National Golf Club, major college golf’s first tournament of the spring.

Arizona’s Henry Liaw, Arizona State’s Alejandro Canizares and Texas’ Matt Mills each finished 54 holes with identical nine-under 204 totals and retuned to the 18th tee to break the tie.  Two trips through the finishing hole were needed to eliminate Mills from contention and left only two men on the course nearly eight hours after play had begun.

Both Liaw and Canizares displayed a wealth of shots from tee to green that pushed the playoff to four holes before Liaw prevailed with an eagle-3.  For Liaw, it was his second career victory.  Incidentally, Liaw and Canizares played the 18th hole six times on Tuesday.

The playoff practically overshadowed Brigham Young’s effort in winning the team title.  The Cougars erased an 11-stroke deficit after the first round to win the 16-team event by nine strokes.  BYU’s 18-under 834 total was nine strokes better than Arizona and Arizona State’s 843 tally, which tied the in-state rivals for second place.  New Mexico (848), Pepperdine and Tulsa (850) rounded out the top five places.

Arizona’s performance was easily the team’s best of the season, and was the Wildcats’ 843 (-9) tally was the first under-par tournament total of 2005-06.  In addition to Liaw’s heroics, junior Nathan Tyler shot a three-under 210 and finished in ninth place.  Junior Josh Esler posted a top-20 finish with a one-over 214 that was good enough to tie for 18th place.

The Arizona Junior Varsity finished in ninth place and was led by freshman Nicholas Park.  Park carded a two-under 211 and finished in a tie for 10th place.  Ben Fox shot a 215 (+2) and tied for 21st place, while Ben Marsh shot a four-over 217 to finish tied for 32nd place and in the top half of the field.

The 54-hole PING-Arizona Intercollegiate was contested at Arizona National Golf Club, a par 71, 6,793-yard layout.  The Wildcats will next be in action, Feb. 22-24, at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii.
