Wildcat Women Announce 2003 Team Awards

Tucson, Ariz. (Mar. 3) - The University of Arizona women's basketball squad announced its 2002-03 team awards at it annual banquet on campus Sunday night. Shawntinice Polk, Dee-Dee Wheeler, Krista Warren, Natalie Jones, Katrina Lindner and Julie Brase were all recipients of a variety of awards.

Redshirt freshman center Shawntinice Polk and sophomore guard Dee-Dee Wheeler were selected as co-Most Valuable Players after being first and second, respectively, on the team in scoring. Polk was also named the team's Defensive Most Valuable Player and the Freshman of the Year. She received the Rebounding Leader Award as well, after averaging a team-best 10.9 rebounds per game through regular season play.

 
 

Senior forward Krista Warren was chosen as the Most Improved Player and also received the Academic Achievement Award for having the highest cumulative grade-point average on the squad.

Freshman guard Natalie Jones earned the Hustle Award, while redshirt freshman guard Katrina Lindner received the Most Inspirational Player award. Senior guard Julie Brase was presented with the Free Throw Percentage Award and the Assists Leader Award after leading Arizona in both categories.

The Wildcats ended regular-season play with 20-7 overall and 13-5 Pac-10 records, finishing in a tie for second place in the league standings and equaling the best conference finish in the program's history. Arizona will take on Oregon State in the first round of the Pac-10 Conference Tournament on Saturday, Mar. 8, at 1:15 p.m. PST in HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
