UCLA Holds First Round Lead of National Invitational Tournament

                Host Wildcats in third place; Tyler, Esler stand in eighth place

               

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The fifth-ranked UCLA men’s golf team shot an 11-under-par 277 Sunday to grab the first round lead at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Course.

 

Led by the individual leader Erik Flores, who tallied a seven-under 65, the Bruins put four of its five golfers at par or better en route to the 11 under first round tally.  UCLA leads the 15-team field by one stroke heading into tomorrow’s second round.  Arizona State (278), host Arizona (281), New Mexico (282) and Minnesota (285) round out the top five places.

 

Two Arizona golfers stand in the top 10, as Nathan Tyler and Josh Esler each carded a three-under 69.  Freshman Nicholas Park shot a one-under 71 and is tied for 20th place.  The UA’s 281 total was its lowest team total in its last seven rounds played.

 

Also competing for the Wildcat varsity was Henry Liaw, who shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 30th place, and Travis Esway, who shot a 73 (+1) and is tied for 39th place.

 

The Wildcat junior varsity shot an opening-round 293 (+5) and stands in 13th place.  Trey Denton is the JV’s top finisher with a one-under 71, which has tied him for 20th place.

 

The National Invitational Tournament runs through Tuesday at Omni Tucson National, a par 72, 7,148-yard facility.  Monday’s action begins at 7:30 a.m. MST.
