Feb. 4, 2009

TUCSON--University of Arizona football coach Mike Stoops and staff have signed 24 players for the 2009 season including today's group of 21 players and three who enrolled at mid year.

In all UA added five defensive linemen, four linebackers, four offensive linemen, two receivers, a quarterback, and two tight ends, running backs, defensive backs and athletic skill-position players whose positions will be determined later.  Nineteen in the class are freshmen, with three junior college signees.

"I really like the overall athleticism and skill of this recruiting class," Stoops said. "We looked for athletes with size and speed and believe this group brings those qualities.

"We had an immediate need to bring in depth at linebacker, and that was a focus, as was bringing in some mid-year guys who I think can help our offensive line," he said. "I'm pleased with the entire recruiting process."

The Cats signed players to nine positions with the class, plus two "athletic" recruits whose college positions, as is the case for others, could be on either side of the ball - offensive tackle, tight end, running back, receiver, quarterback, defensive back, defensive end, defensive tackle and linebacker.

The February signees join three mid-year transfers who signed letters in December, cornerback Marcus Benjamin and projected offensive tackles Jack Julsing and Shane Zink.

"The staff did an outstanding job of evaluation from the start in building this recruiting class," Stoops said. "We were organized in bringing kids in for visits, getting commitments and keeping in touch. It paid off," he said.
