TUCSON, Ariz. - The third-ranked Arizona softball team held Phoenix Community College scoreless in back-to-back exhibition games Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium, outscoring the Bears 14-0 in the first game and 6-0 in the second.
Sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell earned a win in the first game, pitching five hitless innings. Sophomore pitcher Leslie Wolfe relieved Hollowell in the sixth, striking out two. Hollowell also made a relief appearance in the second game, striking out six of nine batters over the final three innings of the 6-0 shutout.
In the first game, senior catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a first-inning home run over the centerfield wall to put the Cats on the scoreboard. Junior third baseman Jackie Coburn hit a fourth-inning, two-RBI double to center, and senior first baseman Erin Palomarez added an RBI double in the fifth.
Wolfe was the starting pitcher in the second game, striking out four over two innings. Freshman Annalyn Hollingsworth relieved Wolfe over the third and fourth innings, notching a strikeout.
Freshman shortstop Kristie Fox hit a solo home run to start off the second inning, and sophomore second baseman Shelly Schultz added another solo shot in the bottom of the third to put the Cats up 5-0.
Arizona will kick off the regular season on Feb. 6-8, when the Cats will host New Mexico, Mississippi, Cal State Northridge and UNLV in the Arizona Pepsi Classic tournament held at Hillenbrand Stadium.
