Women's tennis takes down Lumberjacks

The Arizona women's tennis team defeated their in-state rivals, the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 6-1 on Saturday.

In singles, the Cats were led by senior Danielle Steinberg, who defeated Kim Van Ginkel 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot.

In the No. 3 spot, junior Ariane Masschelein defeated Orsi Golovics, 6-3, 6-1.

"It was a good effort by all today, especially from some of our injured players," said assistant coach Ryan Stotland, "It was a good win, and we're looking forward to next week's challenge against our Pac-10 rivals."

In doubles, Masschelein and her partner, freshman Debora Castany fell to Golovics and Stacey Pinchbeck, 8-4.

Then, junior Claire Rietsch and freshman Natasha Marks defeated Van Ginkel and Edit Suhajda 8-4, and Steinberg and freshman Sarah Landsman defeated Leslie Vial and Yumi Hasegawa, 8-0.

Up next, the Cats host Cal State Northridge on Saturday, February 7 at 10 a.m., and then they host Pac-10 rivals Arizona State on February 8 at 1 p.m.
