TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Wildcat softball team opened the Fall Classic exhibition tournament Friday with a five-inning, 9-1 win over Arizona Western College.
Senior Mackenzie Vandergeest led the Cats, going three-for-three and driving in five, including a three-run homer in the third inning. Freshman centerfielder Caitlin Lowe went two-for-three with a fielder's choice, scoring three runs in her Wildcat debut.
All-American sophomore Autumn Champion got off to a good start, notching two hits in three at-bats in the leadoff spot and scoring two runs. Sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell worked three perfect innings, striking out six with one putout. Freshman pitcher Annalyn Hollingsworth made her debut with the Cats, pitching the remaining two innings and allowing one run on two hits, striking out two.
Arizona will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 25, versus New Mexico at 5 p.m., and Central Arizona College at 7 p.m.
