The Arizona gymnastics team traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota this weekend to compete in the NCAA Regional Championship. Along with the Wildcats, Utah, Arkansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Southern Utah competed in the meet. In addition to the six teams, individual competitors from Air Force and Utah State competed.

The Cats came in fourth place, scoring a 194.275 behind Minnesota. Utah and Arkansas took first and second respectfully, advancing them to the national championships in Athens, Georgia.

"This meet does not define who we are as a team, and we will not let it tarnish how well we have done all season," said head coach Bill Ryden, "I am very proud of us."

With a few injuries occurring in the warm-ups, the Cats began the evening on vault with a solid team score of 48.775. Senior Karin Wurm took the lead with a 9.825, giving her 11th place while sophomore Miranda Russell came in 14th with a 9.800. Junior Sarah Specht followed with a 9.750.

Continuing on bars, senior Karin Wurm leading the Cats once again with a 9.800, earning her eighth place. Alexis Greene and Danielle Hicks followed with a 9.700. The team total was a 48.500.

On the balance beam, the Cats struggled to hang on, scoring a team total of 47.800, but senior Danielle Hicks continued her high status scoring a 9.875 giving her second place while junior Briana Bergeson notched a solid 9.775 earning her twelfth place.

The Cats finished strong on floor, scoring a 49.200 total. Junior Bree Workman lead the Cats, scoring a 9.875 and earning fourth place while junior Sarah Specht and Wurm both earned a 9.850 placing them at sixth. Senior Danielle Hicks earned 14th with a 9.825.

"I'm glad we finished with six strong floor routines as a sort of a tribute to our team, and it shows that we did not give up despite our injuries," Ryden said.

This meet completes the 2008 season for the Arizona gymnastics team.
